The Department of Biology, Universitas Brawijaya (UB) again increased the number of Professors after the inauguration of Luchman Hakim, S.Si., M.Agr.Sc., Ph.D. as Professor in Environmental and Tourism Management Science of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Widyaloka UB Building, Malang (Wednesday, 04/12/2019). He obtained the position of the 23rd professor in FMIPA as well as the 257th in UB at the young age of 46 years after conducting various researches on environmental management and ecotourism, thus leading him to become the first professor in this field in the biology department. Today, the Department of Biology had eight professors with expertise in Cell and Nano Biology, Molecular Biology, Biomechanism and Nutrigenomics, Immunology, Cancer Biology, Reproductive Biology, Entomology and Insect Ecology, and Environmental and Tourism Management.
In his scientific speech, the well-known and cheerful person conveyed the topic of “Strengthening Environmental Aspects in the Competitive and Sustainable Nature Tourism Industry in Indonesia” to answer strategic environmental and biological resource management problems to improve competitiveness and tourism industry sustainability.
He explained that Indonesia had the advantages of natural resources but decreased in the management, impacting the competitiveness and sustainability of Indonesian tourism in the future. The decline in resources such as environmental degradation and the increasing threat to biodiversity sustainability in tourist areas was factual evidence of the problems faced. Thus, Indonesia’s position still lags behind Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand on Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI) for environmental sustainability scores.
“Indonesia, which has mega biodiversity wealth, needs to rise by mobilizing science and technology to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of the tourism sector through various programs that can optimize natural resources, culture, and human resources owned,” said the husband of Feny Claudiya.
In addition, in his scientific speech, he also touched on the strategic position of biological resources and ecosystems in the development of national tourism as well as the concept of tourist destinations, biodiversity conservation, and the ecological role of tourist destinations as scientific and technological instruments in the management of natural resources and the environment as prospective tourist destinations to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of the tourism industry.
“The position of natural resources in developing national tourism is very strategic along with increasing visits to natural tourism areas. The Government of Indonesia should encourage the management of natural resources and ecosystems as tourist destinations through planning based on consideration of interactions between living systems and environmental, ecological, and biological factors. The development of the natural tourism sector must give a real contribution to the preservation of biological resources and the environment to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of tourist destinations,” he said.
Good luck, Prof. Luchman Hakim, S.Si., M.Agr.Sc., Ph.D., and hopefully more useful for the community and the nation (Esaf).
