DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY

FACULTY OF MATHEMATICS AND NATURAL SCIENCES

Profile

History of Magister Biology Study Program began from Master Reproductive Biology Study Program, wherein 1995 the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, with the assistance of academic staff from other faculties (Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Agriculture, Medicine, and Fisheries), proposed to establish a magister study program through the Postgraduate Program of Universitas Brawijaya. One of the basic considerations in realizing the desire to establish this study program is the development of potential human resources/academic staff who have academic professorship and doctoral positions; sufficient laboratory infrastructure for doctoral research and research culture activities; capable work result; good development of science and technology, especially in the field of molecular biology. In addition, the market demand for experts, both researchers, and professionals is also increasing.

At that time, educational activities of the Master Reproductive Biology Study Program were legally under the Postgraduate Program in Plant Science, although, in essence, all academic activities were very independent and could be carried out in the Department of Biology and some of its supporting faculties, but it was only in 1999 that the proposal was realized after the issuance of Decree No. 362/ DIKTI/Kep/1999, dated July 26, 1999. After issuing the decree, the Reproductive Biology Study Program was de jure an independent study program under UB’s Postgraduate Program. In the 2006/2007 academic year, postgraduate management in UB was transferred to the faculty as the scientific parent of the postgraduate program. So, the Magister Reproductive Biology Study Program was managed directly by the Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

The development of the Master Reproductive Biology Study Program can be said to have developed significantly following the development of the Department of Biology. With the support of TPSDP Block Grant funds, human resources of the Department of Biology have increased significantly, both from the indicators of increasing the number of lecturer staff with doctoral degrees, the number of publications, and the presence of lecturers in scientific forums at national and international levels, laboratory facilities, libraries, and academics. As a result, the atmosphere in the department is also increasing. On the other hand, the development of science and technology, especially in the field of molecular biology, is growing rapidly.  Modern biological science is not only related to biotechnology but is also closely related to environmental issues and biodiversity. Realizing this, the Magister Reproductive Biology Study Program then changed to a Magister Biology Study Program with interest in Reproductive Biology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Conservation Biology (environmental biology and management of biological resources)

Graduates of the Master of Biology are expected to have high competence in the field of modern biology. So, they can work in various fields such as education, community advocacy, bureaucrats, research and development of science, and independent work as entrepreneurs, especially those engaged in bioindustry, bioconservation, and management of biological resources. As we know, this sector is very prospective and needed in increasing the nation’s competitiveness.

Vision, Mission, and Goals

Vision

“Being an exemplary study program in providing Masters in Biology education in accordance with the best international standards through innovative research and development of modern biological concepts to understand the meaning of life, the function of creation and play an active role in solving biological problems faced by society.”

Mission

Serving the people of East Java, Indonesian citizens, and human being through the best programs to:

  • Organize education so that graduates have a thorough understanding of modern biological concepts and a good academic profile, uphold ethics, and are able to work together in an interdisciplinary manner for biosphere conservation.
  • Educate students to have the skills and expertise of research innovations in the development of reproductive biology.
  • Educate students to be able to work in teams with full independence, have a responsibility in decision making to develop knowledge, and solve problems related to the field of biology or multidisciplinary.

Goals

  • To produce a qualified master of biology, fear God Almighty, have an entrepreneurial spirit so that they become professional workers who are able to compete at the international level.
  • To develop science and technology based on modern biological concepts published scientifically and useful to help the community.

To make efforts to apply science and technology research results through community service programs
